intermittent Electrical Problem

HELP!!! LOL. I have a 2003 F-350 Srw 4X4, 7.3. Last summer out at the river my truck did something really strange. The radio turn off, and I could not roll down the windows. It lasted about 20 seconds and then all was well. It has done it off again on again since that time. It is so intermittent that I have no idea when it would do it. I thought it was brought on by the heat, but this march in cold weather it did it again.

Today my wife was driving it, and it shut off for about 20 minutes, I thought great now I can figure it out because it finally broke, but then it started to work again. Last weekend my wife open the glove box and the radio shut off...lol.

The problem is this when it did it today the radio went off, the windows did not roll down, and she said that the AC was barley blowing, which is a new symptom. The AC has never been afected by this issue.

When the radio and windows start to work, I notice a click under the dash??? Anyone have any ideas what it might be??? Please help!!!

Perhaps the Blower was affected by the Engine Shutting Down and reducing Current to the Blower Motor?

Now, here is a stupid question? Do you have any LED's or HID's on the Truck? Also, have you replaced your Third Brake Light? (There is a TSB on this). Upgraded Headlamps OR Tail Lamps?

The only noise I can think of under the dash would be a relay or Blend Door?

Many people report anomalies such as yours when adding HID's, LED's and such. Apparently FoMoCo knows about the Brake Light issue.

Tom.

This is getting to be a common issue with the 2002 and up trucks. In 2002 the instrument cluster was replaced with a "hybrid instrument cluster" and the GEM became the "VSM". The radio and windows (and accessory delay) are controlled by a relay on the hybrid instrument cluster which communicates with the VSM which is located approx. behind the radio. Some people report that smacking the dash right there will restore the radio and windows temporarily. There is a big thread about this right now at another PSD forum. The VSM also controls the keyless entry, autolamp, courtesy lights and door ajar lamp. So it could be the cluster or the VSM.

There are places now that will fix your hybrid cluster.

On mine it was the VSM, cost me $550 at the dealer.(has to be programmed) I had all the symptoms, doors locking and unlocking at random, door ajar lamp on, accessory delay not working right and autolamp not working.

With your symptoms if I had to guess I would say Instrument Cluster.
Not sure about the AC blower though, or if it is related.

Hey Tom,

I do have HID lights on top of my roof rack, however this issue began way before that install.

Interesting, and sounds just like my issue. Yesterday was the first time the Air conditioning was affected. I thinking maybe a drain was on the system. Does anyone have a link on this board to the forums about this particular issues.
