If you've got a decent jack, take it and place it under the oil pan. Put a block of wood with a cutout/depression for the drain plug on top of the jack, and you can level the engine a bit that way.
Really, the engine is fairly stable with just the two side mounts; it will sit there(angling backwards quite a bit) if the transmission is removed, so all you need to do is lift a little bit to keep it square - you can almost tilt it back and forth by hand.

Right. Thanks.
Yes, the motor has the look of being pretty balanced with its side mounts.
Jack the motor up enough to get something under the tranny from leaf spring to leaf spring. set it back down until the tranny is supported, then separate them. FYI, a dressed IDI is in the neighborhood of 1300 lbs.

Thanks. Yes, I know they are crazy-heavy. I have a 2-ton hoist...but, I have no faith in the weight ratings attached to low-end hydraulic products. We'll see how it goes.
This really makes me appreciate having access to a loader. FWIW, your 2ton hoist will lift them both fine. Use the engine lift points, with a ratchet strap on the trans to level it.

Oh sure, rub it in...
Loader, fork lift, back hoe...I have none of that.
Yes, I'll use the three factory lift points plus one I added. I will, however, yank the transmission first. 2 tons seems way over-kill, but I have had had 2-ton floor jacks which could just barely lift one front wheel on these diesel trucks.
^^^ Yeah! Hey if you took the hood off and had a big stack of batteries you could pull your truck's engine with it's own crane! How cool of a youtube video would THAT make??
hahaha! no need for a big stack of batteries.i ran heavy cable the whole length of the truck.she stays fully juiced with the truck running.
edit! oh duh.if you wanted to pull your own engine though.yeah.sorry.long day......long week!
just park another vehicle at the back battery (where there is a now a under body toolbox for a battery) and just run jumper cables........but to pluck an engine out,she wouldn't even run the battery all the way down.i was able to load a few logs before i knew i had to run a cable to keep her fully charged.
but this truck is so long,i don't think she'd reach to pluck her own engine though anyway lol.
