Can I pull my oil pan withought pulling the engine?? I'm woried about trying it and ending up not clearing the oil pick up and being stuck not being able to get the pan resealed just to have too pull the engine in a hurry.
I was set up to pull my motor this past fri night but my help bailed and I had to work sat morning on top of no help. I still need to get in the bottom end for oil pump and rod bearings so if I don't need to pull the engine I could do it tomarow night.
you know i have done this once 15 or 16 years ago without removing the motor and its not that easy with twin I beam, but if you dont want to pull the motor heres what you can do. you will need to remove the motor mount nuts under the motor mount tower, loosen up and slide back the flanges from your exaust pipes from the ex manifolds, remove the air cleaner, loosen the tranny bolts but dont remove them, mine was a 4 speed, if yours is a auto tranny you might need to watch so you dont mess up (bend) your linkage, drain the oil and remove as many of the pan bolts as you can but leave 1 or 2. place a 2x4 around 1 ft long or something under your crank pully going left to right, use a floor jack to lift the front of the motor up, you will need a short 4x4 or something from the jack to the 2x4, "DO IT SLOWLY" also do something so the block dosent walk while your jacking, when you get some clearance you will need to remove the pick up tube from the pump, then you can walk the oil pan out at a slight angle, it will be a challenge to do this, when i did it i didnt have a lift to remove the motor and it was winter, so i got creative and did what i just explaned to you, i dont think i left out any steps but be careful the motor dosent walk to the side on you, once you get the height you need (and it wont be to much) block up the motor with something under the motor mounts. i never tried to tighten cap bolts by this process only removed and cleaned the screen. you could wiggle the motor a bit to much and that wouldnt be good. "a last note" when i did this and finished the job i said to myself i never want to do this again unless its a dire emergency. good luck
It's actually not too bad on these trucks. Pull the radiator, jack the engine up as far as you can, drop the pan, unbolt the pump and pickup, and bring the pan out through the front.
If you have access to an engine hanger it makes the job a whole lot easier, but most of the commercially available ones seem to be limited to 500lbs. The FE will be over that.
