Help!! Steering box?

2000 v10 X..... Slight play in the steering wheel. At times, when driving and you make a turn when turn is completed truck pulls so bad to whichever side you turned you have to fight it then it will jerk really hard to opposite side then straighten itself out. Could this be the steering box? Or something else? Please help!!!

Check the steering gear by hand.

Unlock the steering column, have someone move the steering wheel back and forth while you watch and feel the Pitman arm. If there's movement of the input shaft but a lag in the movement of the arm, then the gear is worn and has play in it.

Check your tie rod ends, drag link, and ball joints for (any) excessive play.

This part of it isn't exactly rocket science....

Sounds more like a ball joint.

Could also be the gear if someone has messed with the adjustment screw.

I have almost the exact same issue. Ball joints and tie rod ends are good though. I didn't check anything else yet but I think it's the steering box. Once or twice it was hard to turn the wheel in one direction and when it did go it felt like something was stuck somewhere preventing it from moving and then it just popped past whatever it was stuck on. Hard to describe but I really think it's the steering box on mine.

Do you have 4wd? Perhaps one of your front axle u-joints binds up...

I have 4x4. But if the hubs are unlocked the u joints dragging shouldn't effect the steering, no? They shouldn't be dragging if they are not even turning. The hub are unlocked and the u joints can be spun freely by hand.

The Ujoint still has to pivot when turning whether the hub is locked or not. You can check the joints by locking in the hub and turning the wheels all the way to the right or left then jack up one wheel at a time and spin it , if it spins smooth with the wheel turned to either direction the joint is most likely fine,,

I hear. So what your saying is that even though it's not spinning, if the pivot point within the ujoint is worn then when the wheel is turned back it can catch on the worn area.....I didn't think of it that way. I assumed it only mattered when the axle was locked, when it's unlocked the u joint is just sitting there taking a snooze while the axle is doing all the load bearing. I'll have to do this test one of these days. Thanks.
