A/C lines leaking

I believe my rear AC lines in my 2003 EB V10 X pooped the bed on me today and Ford wants 3K to fix. I'm wondering if I could fix it my self. The leak was a bright green color so I'm assuming it was 134 or what ever in in the AC. The leak is right behind the passenger side of the motor just a little lower than the head. Has this ever happened to anyone? The dealer wants to replace almost everything for 3k but they don't want to budge on just repairing the broken line. Anyone have any good experience with aftermarket parts or line fixes? I've been reading old posts but want to know if anything new is on the market. Is it all one piece? Can I cut and splice? Please let me know.

Yes this is a fairly common problem with our excursions. It more commonly wears a hole back near the rear tire though. Many of us have spliced these using a Dorman A/C splice kit and it holds up well. I'm not 100% sure with your location of the leak so hopefully someone else will chime in here soon. Yes the line is all one piece and is very costly to get replaced. The splice has worked well for me. There is a how-to thread on here somewhere.

Thanks for the reply. I did see a few threads on the line splice. I'll check it out.

Your leak is like mine, where the lines rub on each other behind the rt head. For now, my rear lines are disconnected and plugged. Main lines plugged where the rears attach.

So I have a pickup a/c system!! Works well in my area, but obviously cools down slowly without the rear system helping. Probably would be inadequate down in the SW or in FL in the summer. We were in AZ and down in Yuma in March, and it did ok.

Guess one day, when I feel like being underneath the EX, I'll probably pull and either splice or weld.

Thanks for the reply. I was leaning towards just camping off the rear for now to get the ac working. I hardly use the rear to begin with. Any chance you have pics of the lines to cap? How did you do it? I'm trying to find the schematics for the ac lines but my ford dealer is being a little sketchy.

Here are some pics of the connections. You can see the block off tubes, and the rear tubes have plugs in the opening and covered with foam wrap to keep them from further damage.

I went to a local yard with my trusty tubing cutter, found an EX that still had the rear lines hooked up, cut the pipes aboot 6 in back from the coupling. Had a local welder crimp and weld the stubs. It's been aboot 2 years since the fix, and still cools well. May put the gauges on this summer and add freon as called for.

You can find block off plates on-line, but my memory is that they were way to expensive for (at that time!) a experimental fix. Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

I had the rear lineset replaced years ago, due to a leak. The original factory set was a single piece, and the Ford replacement was 2 piece.

Today my A/C stopped blowing cold. Sounds like a high side leak in the area you have pictured in post #1. Yay.

I guess you have the same luck as me. I don't know how I'm going to fish a solid line back behind this motor. The repair quote was only 1 hr so I guess there is some super duper secret to installing that line. Good luck my friend... I know I'm going to need it

Thanks for the pics and info. I think I'm going to try to find a radiator repair place to fix the line or I'll see if I can fit the parts into my budget to replace the lines. If that dosent work in going to block the lines like yours and call it a day. For the cost of the repair I'll put a window unit in like an RV!

A little follow up for anyone searching in the future

I just wanted to update this thread just incase anyone needs help in the future. It turns out AC cooling solutions does not make a rear block off kit that would work with my X. They will customer make a set of all rubber lines for you for about $300 or a little more. Some how I got lucky and scored a new set of high pressure ford lines for just over $300. That's all I needed. They were about $800 originally just for the high side. So make friends with the parts guy and bring him some BBQ. It worked for me. It only took about 30 min to fish the lines behind the engine block and run down the back of the truck. You will need a quick connect tool for the back of the truck. Fairly easy R&R job. Good luck and PM me if you have any questions
