I picked up a set of auxiliary reverse lights and was looking under the hood to see if I could find a spot to get through the firewall. I don't see any grommets to try going through. All the wires from under the hood come together and go through this one harness pictured below. Has anyone found a spot to go through? I need to wire a switch so I can turn the lights on independently of the reverse lights themselves for hooking/unhooking my trailer in the dark.
Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I may look one more time but if there is a spot to enter thru it seems like it won't be very easily accessible anyways. At least not from the few spots I looked. What about getting power to a dash switch? I'm going to hook them up to a relay just to be safe. But I need to tap into something to power the switch to run the relay. Is a simple fuse tap a bad idea? It should carry a very low draw from the switch and most of the juice is at the relay. I want to be able to turn the rear LED lights with the truck on or off and with or without headlights on. Any recommendations?
i pulled up the carpet on the passenger foot well a little bit, and went through the grommet on in the body mount well. I just used a step bit to drill a small hole facing the engine bay, and routed the wiring up over the inner wheelwell.
If you've got an auto trans you can drill through the plate that covers the hole that would be used for the rod from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder. It's fairly easy to get at and doesn't require molesting the actual cab.
As far as the wiring, I put a Radio Shack project box under the hood with a fuse panel in it. I take power from the same fuse for both the switch under the dash (that switches the relay) and the relay that actually powers the lights. That way if I blow the fuse the lighted switch doesn't light and I know the fuse is blown.
For my backup lights I got kind of fancy with the wiring. I have a dedicated switch for them, and they go on any time that switch is on. But they also go on any time my fog lights are on and I'm in reverse. The fog lights are wired so they go on when the switch for them is on and the parking lights are on (that way I don't have to turn them off, they go off when I turn the headlights off).
