I've been thru all the posts on the little actuator cam but most are from 87. The 1980 model simply has an eye bolt type connection from the geared block to the rod... I took the switch off the column and with the truck running, moved the ignition switch mechanism manually with a screwdriver and can find no spot where this truck even wants to begin to shut off... my column might have been scavanged out of another vehicle as it has a cruise control switch on it, but the truck had no cruise as far as I can tell (4 spd 4x4)... could it be I have a mismatch in wiring harness or switch.... every other switch position does exactly what it is supposed to... I've been thru alot of crap on this truck and hate to have something like this stalling me...... thanks for any help or ideas
I've got a 1980 F100 and it has a hinky ignition switch. You have to manually move the key while its running to get the guages and radio to come on. I also think this might in someway play into the fact that I have no dash lights since I've checked everything else I can think of. You problem does indeed sound like a scavanged column assembly that has a slightly different wiring harness. I encounterd this along time ago. The application of the thing was great. All the plugs fit but since there was one years difference, GM kept the same style of plug and just left two wires off. Even though it fit, it had no fire. I'm sure Ford does the same thing. Sounds like it since you indicated it has a cruise control switch on it. I guess if all else fails you could install a manual kill switch under dash that would kill the fire to the ECM. Just a thought. Good luck amigo. Let me know what developes-jr
The switch just bolts to the top of the column under the dash. if your under-dash harness is original to the truck, wouldn't a 1980 ignition switch just bolt on the column? In fact, if I have time, I will go look up the numbers at autozone.com, and see if there is any difference in the ignition switch.
Just got back from looking and yes, all ignition switches are not the same.
I looked up an 1980 with a 302 and it's Wells part no. LS503.
I then looked up a 1987 with 302 FI and it's a Wells part no. LS515.
The 1980 was about $9.00 and the 1987 was about $7.00.

turns out I have my stop light circuit somehow keeping my coil positive wire hot.... I even unplugged the ignition wire harness while the truck was running and it still kept running...
from the 80-86 forum, someone suggested I check for voltage at the + coil terminal with the key in off position.... I had voltage and there should be none... from there I started pulling fuses and checking voltage... got to the second fuse and voltage stopped.... some good old boys wired up the rear lights after sticking on a wood stake bed.... I suspect they tapped somewhere they shouldn't have... but for now.... pull the fuse, I can shut it off woth the key.... put the fuse in and I have brake lights...... woo hoo
Good job. Don't it make you feel good when you track someting like this down. Now all you have to do is undo what the good ole boys did and wire it right.
