Well, I was driving home from a 4 mile round trip the other day and when i parked truck in driveway the alternator was smoking and burning up a little, no fire or anything but it was smoking. Took both batteries off immediately and let the truck sit.
I took batteries to local battery pros and he recharged and load tested them to verify if they were still good, they were! So next thing was to put them back on the truck and crank it and volt test them while the truck was running to make sure the alternator was dead. Batteries tested at 12.2 volts while engine running so I began to pull the alternator. I am in the process of getting a new one so I can hopefully install it today or tonight in the driveway. I love my truck, but this engine compartment is so tight to work in thats for sure. I thank God for my small hands!
Yep thats all that I had to remove, My little hands squeezed in there really well! I got the dead one off last night and am waiting on my new one to arrive and I will install it tonight!
Well here is the final update- I know a lot of people complain about any service and maintenance on these engines, but changing the alternator was really not hard at all. Never had any problems getting the dead one removed and the new one installed. Even getting the belt back on only took about 5 minutes. I would say after doing this first one that i cold replace it again in 45 minutes tops probably. It really was simple. Even a belt change could be very simple to me!
