1992 Explorer Low charge rate

I went to go somewhere tonight and I noticed the dash lights were not as bright as usual, then I checked the gauge it read on the N of the normal and the battery light was lit up.
Tested the voltage at the alternator and battery and got 12 1/2 volts, I am thinking the regulator went bad. Is it worth to just change the regulator or should I install another alternator?
As tips, advice, are welcome and appreciated. thanks

I went to go get the alternator and a couple miles down the road the alternator starting charging normally, i picked the alternator up with a new belt and the alternator took a mile or to to kick on.
So I changed the belt but didn't install the new alternator yet to se if that was the problem, nope still does the same thing.
I am going to install the new alternator when I have time and was going to have the old one rebuilt.
This problem is the alternator or could it be something else?
All comments advise and suggestions welcomed. Feel free, jump right on in, add your 2 cents, all at no obligation to buy anything, lol

Sounds to me you're on the right track. Does your parts store load test the alternators and batteries as a free service? Might pay to do it if they do the service.

The regular is part of the alternator, however I suspect the alternator is your problem, not the regulator (typically when the regulator goes bad it overcharges). Just get a good quality remanufactured alternator assembly and you should be.. good to go!

Good luck

I will hopefully get a chance to throw new alternator on tomorrow. Can I rebuild the old one myself or is it better to take it somewhere to have it rebuilt?

Years ago in school I rebuilt several, and shortly after, out of necessity as a poor college student I was able to successfully rebuild one on my 1970 Ford with a 360 in it. The kit was very cheap and the only trick was using a paper clip to work with the brushes. As I recall, the kit came with a new regulator, diodes, bearings, and brushes, but that was years ago. Nowadays, I'd just buy a rebuilt one. I'm not even sure about availability of the kits...and I'm not even sure if the alternators are built the same way. I'm sure someone smarter than me can give you a better answer......

yeah that's the way it was years ago, I called a place and asked what is the cost to rebuild the old alternator, the guy said they were too expensive to rebuild. lol
I am going to take the old one to another place where they fix what is wrong with the alternator. If it's around 50 bucks I will tell him to fix it and i will have a spare.
Thanks for the replies, this officially closes this case on the low chargeing rate post, lol .
