just recently bought a 1977 f100 custom explorer. ..
I am trying to figure out the factory color. I looked at the Vin decoder tags online. Thing is my tag doesn't look like those - it looks like this... no Vin tag on dash either..
Use this Decoding '73-'79 Ford Truck VIN Tags - FORDification.net
There is no vin tag, but the vin is on the decal in your picture, the warranty tag on the door, and on the top of the frame rail on the passenger side in the engine bay.
Thanks.. i actually looked at that link and tried to figure out the factory color.. do u know which number in my Vin that represents the color code for my truck? Not sure I make sense.. thanks for your help
There is no color code in the VIN. Look on the back edge of the driver's door for the metal warranty plate. It's riveted to the door just below the latch. That will have the "color" code, one letter is single color, two letters = two tone.
Thanks.. but unfortunately for me there is no other tags other than the one I posted... i guess with that missing.. I'll never know... only reason I wonder about color is the dash is a lite blue looking.. and the outside color doesn't seem like a factory color scheme that be used.. thanks again for your rely
Look again, make sure it hasn't been painted over.
You can get a new warranty plate from marti auto Marti Auto Works - Concourse Quality, Hobbyist Price You can also order a "Marti Report" from them, this gives you all the information on how your truck was equipped when it left the factory, important dates, original selling dealer, etc.
This is what Marti's work looks like:
Thanks Mike... I found where the riveted tag was...lol.. not sure why it was removed.. i will look into the info you provided.. thanks so much for your replied you been a great help!
chances are one of the ops switched a door at some point. you may want to make sure your vin on your title and the frame vin match. if that is the same i would be looking at getting a new warranty tag may help when you go to tag/title the truck
Hate to but in but where on the frame is the Vin? Stamped or a plate? I looked on pass side but can't see and numbers
The VIN is stamped in two places, one visible, one hidden. The visible VIN is in the engine compartment on the top right (passenger side) frame rail. It can be anywhere between the radiator support and firewall but is most commonly found about inline with the alternator. It can be hard to find/read because of years of dirt, grease, mud and road grime. Use a wire brush and carb cleaner. Sometimes the number is lightly stamped or, on rare occasions, not stamped at all.
The hidden VIN is also on the top right frame rail, under the cab, usually about 10"-12" behind the front cab mount.
To the OP, your truck has definitely been repainted. The rubber plug below the federal cert sticker should be black, not body color and you can see the mask line around the cert sticker. The truck's original color is visible in the clear boundary around the sticker. Marti also reproduces the sticker should you ever want to repaint.
Ah yea old vehicles like these do not have the VI plate's on the dash like new vehicles. I think that started in the 80's.
The metal tag that should be riveted on the dvrs side door end edge is the WARRANTY TAG and the white sticker on the B piller is the SAFETY STANDARDS CERTIFICATION LABEL.
Both should have the VI# along with the 2 places on the frame as Mike said.
Bill of sale only.... how are you going to title it? You must have some interesting regs in Alabama about selling/buying a vehicle without a title.
Title goes with the frame, NOT the body. Your Vi # is F10GUX80939
