My truck is equipped with dual fuel tanks, but the fuel gauge only works on the forward tank. I'd like to get it working so it reads on the rear tank as well.
Am I looking at a float problem in the rear tank, or could something else be causing it?
I don't know if it reads empty all the time or not.
Since I bought the truck, I just haven't used the rear tank. I don't even know if there's fuel in it. But I just went out and flipped the switch, and the gauge immediately fell to Empty.
Might want to put some gas in & see if it moves. If it doesn't then it's likely a sunk float. My front tank float did it several years ago, always reads E.
That is a possibility, however I don't know why the seller would've told me that the gauge didn't read on the rear tank when in fact it does.
Word to the wise and I'm sure you wouldn't do anything stupid like I did but don't put very much gas in there until you know the pump works. The previous owner of my truck said it was empty. Well I don't know if it was or not but the guage didn't work so I went to the station for a 250 mile drive home and filled her up. Filled up the 2nd take too and when I flipped the guage to the rear tank it still read totally empty. I had to look to see if there was a hole in the tank lol. Luckly the pump and everything worked, just not the guage

That's exactly why I'm hesitant to put anything in it. Putting just a gallon in may not be enough to tell me whether or not the gauge is actually working, but putting any more in may wind up with me in an unfavorable position if I have to drop a tank with several gallons of fuel in it because the whole pump is shot.

I'm sure someone could tell you or you could find out but if you knew exactly where the pump is then you could turn the key on w our starting it w the selector on that tank and I believe the pump should start buzzing if it's working. Can someone else chime in and confirm? Or stick your hand on where it's at and feel if it's working. I bet the float is dead at the bottom but even so the pump may be shot if he or she hadn't used it in forever
I have the same problem with my front tank... I put about $10 in it just to check, and nothing- all though she does feed ok from it... I think I may swap the tank anyway- it has a dent the size of your head in the front corner...
The rear tank float on my 95 had a hole worn through it where it touched the bottom of the tank. The PO obviously would run the tank dry before switching to the front. When I changed the pump/sending unit assembly, I bent the float wire up a tad so maybe it wouldn't do that again.
