I've been searching for a photo of panel door hinge and found this from a mid-80s Bronco. I think this is the pivot pin I was able to push back into place last summer? The pin is acting up again. The photo shows a hack job, but the problem the man had was a broken door.
I'd sure like to fix this pin problem permanently. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks
Is this picture from your truck or just from another site you found it on. You would be hard pressed to find one of those pins if yours is broken. A junk yard, but not easy to get to. You should be able to find something at your local hardware store that will work. Is it that the pin is broken? Did you check to see if the push rod from vacuum is attached?
The photo shows the outer panel duct cut away. Either the guy took out the dashboard front or the Bronco has the duct system below the dashboard. The piece which is cut out (has the steel strap showing) goes to the panel registers duct system, 6" away. I can't get to it due to the proximity of the dashboard.... frustrating.
IIRC I did it in ~ one hour in the JY but it's been a while; I know the Taurus takes ~4 hours.
But it's pretty easy; remove the top pad, drop the column, unbolt a bunch of 10 (or maybe 8, I forget) mm hex bolts, unplug I think 4 connectors down by the parking brake, other stuff as you encounter it but it's pretty obvious. I think I can put up the official procedure from the shop manual if you think you might want to do it, just let me know...
I'll take off the dashpad top and see what I can do from there. Main thing is to get the panel registers duct/plenum out of the way. I bought a indoscope hoping I can snake it into the area I used last year to push the pin back and see what's what with the pin. I can get one hand in there but only to push the pin back in place, assuming that's what is wrong....again.
Endoscope inspection revealed the pin in correct position. Now thinking vacuum loss problem. I can turn the control lever to OFF then back to ON and the air comes out the vents. Tracking down a vacuum loss problem should be nearly as much fun as taking the dash bezel off. Everything is OE '81 vintage.
BTW: do I have to replace any plastic vacuum lines with plastic again or can I use rubber?
Well, it doesn't take me too long. Was way too hot last summer, so I put it off a little.....till this past week.
Purchased 3 new vacuum motors, a new function switch and 10' of 7/32" rubber vac line.
Panel door hinge was good so at least I didn't have to mess with it.
Job wasn't much fun, but....got'er done.
Accomplished it without disassembling the dash. Took out the center panel, glove compartment door & box and the floor heater duct.
