I've heard mention of the "6 liter tune up" But I haven't been able to find it as a sticky anywhere. Could someone point me in the right direction? My wife is taking the kids to CA for a month and a half this summer so I'll have some free time...
To sum it up: copper Motorcraft plugs gapped between .050 and .055; better plug wires, like 9mm Ford Racing wires or whatever you prefer; new coil, but there was a lot of debate whether or not you need a hotter one. I used an MSD unit that has a really high output and there's not drawback to using a hotter one besides price probably; new cap and rotor, again I used MSD parts there with good results but there are other options; bump the base timing up to ~12* BTDC, or until just before you get spark knock.
It's a very basic tune up that often yields better throttle response, and a little more power since these parts are 20 years old or better.
One more question. Will I need to adjust the idle speed after advancing the timing? I had to do so on on old beater years ago but it had no computer control.
Yes it will, but there are a couple of really minor differences IIRC. Search the net on the sixlitre tune up for a 4.9 or a 300 and see what turns up. I could be mistaken.
