Getting ready to do a tune up on my 97 F250HD with the 5.8l and wanted to see if you all had suggestions for what to buy such as brand wires/plugs etc. Are the Ford ones really worth the money from the dealer?
Figuring on terms of lifespan, the parts from the dealer are OE and that stuff is good for a LONG time (100k+). But it is a little more expensive.
What I did on my 1994 f250 5.8 is all msd and motorcraft plugs. I started with a MSD coil, MSD cap/rotor, MSD streetfire wires*, Motorcraft Copper Core Plugs gapped to .050, and bumped the timing to 14 degrees and she runs like a banshee now. Haven't really run it on the street much to see what fuel mileage is, but when I did a similar set up on my six with the timing bump, I gained 2 mpg and a whole lot of throttle response.
*in hindsight I should have got the ford racing wires from summit. MSD are cut and crimp to length.
Whole tuneup including coil cost me $92 thru Advance Auto, order on line pickup in store and use their discount codes.

aka sixlitre tune-up
I did the same thing on my old '92 F350 w/5.8L engine, I did use the Ford Racing wires, I was very happy with the results.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not too worried about fuel mileage more performance. I've read plenty of posts where Ford racing wires are used-what's the advantage?
Pretty much the same as any aftermarket supplier touts on their ads.
They're slightly larger
They have numbers to tell you where they go!
More resistant to heat, fluids and such
Minimal voltage loss from coil to plug
But, one of the top things, especially for these engines, less chance of crossfire.
