Hello,
Thinking about buy a Cyclone CY 3800 toy hauler.
Pin weight is 3,100
GVWR is 20K
I was thinking the Reese 20K slider hitch would be enough but after reading a couple of other post now I'm thinking I might need to go with either a air ride hitch or a air pin setup? I am planning on installing the Reese under bed mount being my 350 doesn't have it.
I have the TrailAir TriGlide pinbox on my Voltage and it has made a significant difference in the ride. I would definitely recommend some air system between your hitch and the camper. From my research a few years ago, it was more expensive to get an air hitch than an air pinbox, hence I opted for the Curt Q24 hitch, and a camper with the TrailAir. I hope others will chime in regarding their experiences and hitch choices. Any purchase will be a significant investment, and you always hope to get it right the first time.
Thanks for the reply Moogal78,
My current setup is only a 31" 5er. We've been running it for the last 14 years. It's time for us to get one of the big ones. My family has out grown or current one. Never needed an air ride before. I agree, hoping to get it right the first time around.
I don't use air on either end on my last two campers. Both 40+ footers. But the truck matters with that too. My old camper, a 2009 Rage'n was about 3k pin and it rode really well as is. Not sure if your truck is a dually or how good your springs are.
The new one is a 2015 XLR and it has a lower pin weight at 2k for now. (More when I finish equipping it). It would benefit from air more so than the old one. It simply allows for more bounce in the truck's suspension. Which I counter with a bit more air in the truck's bags.
Our combo is the 5th Airborne air pinbox and the 25k Reese Elite with factory under bed rails. Never felt the need for a slider with this or my last hauler with my shortbed. Tows fantastic and the air ride really smooths out the ride. We had the tri-glide on our last rig but they don't make one for 21k GVWR which our new trailer is. It did a touch better job with forward/aft chucking but at the expense of being VERY heavy adding to the pin weight and also since it can move forward and backwards, it would often have a loud clunk when taking off at an intersection.
Do you really need a slider hitch since you have a Long Wheel Base truck? Sliders are used mostly in short wheel base applications.
I have the Ford/Reese 25K hitch for my 2015 and love it. Easy to install and easy to remove. One person can do it. Remove the head and both parts are not overly heavy for one person.
