Hey guys. A buddy with a 2006 F-350 6.0 sold his truck several years ago and he gave me his Hypertech Max Energy tuner today. After receiving it I noticed the tuner was for 2006-2008 6.0/6.4s. I decided to plug it in and see what happened. After entering my VIN, the tuner said my vehicle is not supported. I figured this is because the 10th digit of my VIN is of course a 3 signifying I have a 2003 vehicle. I was wondering if I could simply type it in with a 6 instead and say I have the worlds only 2006 Excursion lol. If need be, I could also swap whichever letter says its an Excursion for one that's a F-250.
My biggest question is, whats the consequences? I find it hard to believe Ford changed the tuning that much for the last 2 years of the 6 liter production. Its also harder to believe that this tuner works with a completely different motor, but not the same motor just a few years older.
I called Hypertech just to see what theyd say and all the operator said was, "That will not work". I didn't get an explanation or anything. Just, "It will not work". So I said thank you and hung up.
Worse case... you kill the motor, but if your willing... maybe we could get a video of it?
I could just see it now.... hey guys, just installed my hypertech tuner and about to go full throttle for the first time.. KER BLAM! Diesel tech Ron would have nothing on your watched you tube count!
He updated it before sending it to me. My biggest fear is frying the computer. I was planning on just running the lowest tune for now til I get some heard studs and such.
If it wont work, ill just give it back to him. It wouldn't be right to sell it for a profit after he gave it to me
2005 Super-Duty got a new PCM in order to support the Message-Center Dash. I suspect since the 2005 Excursion did NOT get that HyperTech couldn't claim 2005+ - hence the 2006-2008 limitation. Thus what you have won't work on the older version PCMs.
DISCLAIMER: My only Ford training is from FTE
Ditch the HyperTech, get an Atlas40 FICM Tune from Ed @ ficmrepair.com. The SCT is THE way to go, with stock torque-to-yield (TTY) bolt safe tunes until you an ARP it!
I had the same situation happen to me. The reason you got that message was because the actual Hypertech unit thinks it’s plugging into that previous vehicle. Finish the update for the previous vehicle (not your year/make/model) and after it’s done go and select your truck off that list. Perform the update now. That is what I had to do. Thought it made zero sense. The vehicle it was last on was a 2010 5.4; my truck is a 2005 5.4.
