Question P0341 Code

A Little Background, my FICM wasn't bad per se but it would dip below 45 volts when the outside temp was around freezing. I pulled it and sent it for repair at the same time the Atlas 40 tune was loaded into the FICM.

First few days of driving mileage was better, truck ran great. All of a sudden one day pulling into the driveway it randomly shutoff. Two occasions since it has acted goofy at started, bucking a little a low throttle. Mileage has returned to how it was before I had the FICM fixed and ATLAS tune applied. To this point I had no codes at all.

Now today it randomly throws P0341 - Camshaft sensor out of range.

So heres the question - do I replace the sensor or try to get at the harness for inspection? Out of range would usually mean the sensor itself is failing while open circuit is usually wiring related. I know its uncommon for this particular sensor to fail but i'm not sure which direction to go.

P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1 or Single Sensor
And is a generic code that applies to all manufacturers.

Some of Fords own diagnostic info is confusing on the relationship between the cam and crank sensors so I think you're right to be suspicious about what the real fault may be.

Given the PCM is looking at frequency and not just voltage for both of these sensors, the condition of the shielding is important. I'd inspect the harness(s) first and take the camshaft diagnosis with a grain of salt. I think there is a write-up in the Tech folder about repairing and working with the shielding but if it's looking bad and budget allows I'd just replace it. Neither are cheap or easy to get to but I'd rather fix it once. (Working on my own vehicle anyway)

Agreed on the fix it once approach, that is really why I want to do a good job figuring out what it is likely to be before I go replacing stuff, the last thing I want is to stand on my head for an hour swapping the sensor and see no improvement.

I did a few searches before posting and saw a writeup about replacing the harness but i'm not sure we are talking about the same one as there wasn't much information about the shielding. The one I saw was a different code that showed an open circuit. What other sensor(s) are known to have potential shielding issues?

Does anyone know what PIds I can monitor for the camshaft sensor and what the normal range is? Same question for ICP

Here's a list of what all the sensors should read:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/a...4&d=1424302615

As far as I know the sync/no sync pid is all that's available for cam or crank sync and they are both lumped together. It's possible to read them directly with a meter capable of displaying Freq.

I don't know if you've seen them but Sean (Yahiko) has posted the diag procedures from the Ford manuals for those sensors for 2004 in another recent thread.

Here they are, post #6:

Thanks Rusty - ill keep those lists on hand

I'm using the torque app and I dont see a PID for CMP/CKP Sync. Anyone got any idea how to add it?

click the little gear in the lower left corner.
click settings,
click manage extra pids / Sensors.
click the 3 dots on the top right,
select "Add custom PID"

enter the info below:

here's FICM Sync also,

Another thing to check for is oil contamination in the connection. Sometimes the o-ring on the sensor fails and a good cleaning (and o-ring replacement) can fix your problem.
