ok so i found threads on how to program etc, but all the keys im looking at for my 01 on ebay (super cheap btw) say that you need TWO original keys in order to program the new one(s). wtf, why do i need TWO? i only have one OEM ford key that the PO gave me when i bought my ex from him. so before i order from ebay (non OEM keys, but reputable sellers, lots of feedback) i figured i'd check here first. i've been meaning to get a spare key since i got my ex back in 2012 and i just never have gotten around to it. i was at home depot yesterday and they had them for 60 bux, almost got it, but funny enough the guy right in front of me was having the same key cut, but hes like "dude ebay/amazon, 10 bux or less". im like, "thanks man!" haha.
i just want to get one to have in case i ever lose my only key. which i did once in a parking lot at night (was riding with a buddy in his lifted SD), and somehow we went back and SOMEHOW i found it...my heart skipped a few beats that night...lol
2 keys you can program a 3rd, 4th etc,. by yourself.
1 key you need to take it to the dealer to program.
Also there is two ways to program a key.
The dealer can program each key with an individual "code" to that truck...I think up to 10 keys or something along those lines for each truck.
Most of the places that cut and program they key for you are actually CLONING they key. Everything will still work but you will NOT be able to program additional keys with a cloned key because as far as the vehicle computer is concerned you're using the same key.
hmm..so basically since i have 1 original key, i can still order one on ebay, get it cut, but have to take to dealer to program it. in the future, i still can't program a 3rd since i have 1 OEM and another ebay one, or i CAN program a third since the dealer will program the 2nd new one so it won't be a "clone"?
wonder how much they charge to program. im guessing upwards of $75 lol...jeeez
I had a local locksmith program my key instead of going to the dealer. They did not clone it, I asked specifically about that. They had a laptop with an OBDII dongle. They actually had to remove my keys and start from scratch. 2 keys got programmed. The 3rd they tried to do but couldn't get it to take do its a clone. My point here is some locksmiths can do the programming like the dealer without having to clone. For 2 additional keys it was $60 total including the keys.
I got one key/fob with my truck. I bought two more sets on ebay. I took the "original" and one of the sets to the dealer and got it programmed ($80). I did the other myself afterward. With 3 sets I should never have to pay the dealer for that again ... I hope. They did give me the door code also.

Sounds like you're all set.
If you are ever down to 2 keys order another ebay one quickly so you don't ever have to go back to the dealer for key programming

I like to have 4 keys so if I get down to 3 I'm not in a hurry. We just got our 2002 Ex and it only came with 2 keys. I ordered 2 more on ebay for $16 (search "2pcs ignition key uncut blade Ford Excursion chip 4c"). Also, ordered 4 key fobs from Amazon, 3 button, for $20. Programmed everything myself and they are all working good. Not sure what "chip 4c" means, but it may be the series transponder chip used in the key.
