My wife lost her key to our 1997 Explorer. We have ONE left. What is the best way to get another one? I know the dealer wants too much. Do you need two keys to program another one? Can I order them online and program them myself? I do have the glovebox manual, I have yet to look in there.
If you have a chipped key ( 1998 - 2001 Ford Explorer Transponder PATS key : eBay Motors (item 370307060155 end time Mar-15-10 01:37:14 PDT) ) you'll have to go to the dealer or find a locksmith with the programmer ...... no options. After you get that 2nd key you can the program a 3rd yourself. Having that 3rd key will save you close to a $100 if you lose the 2nd one again! You can buy the blank from eBay, have it cut wherever you'd have any key cut and drive it to the dealer for programming. Be sure you get the correct blank and if a chipped PATS key that it is "branded" FORD or Strattec.( Strattec is Ford authorized replacement ) FWIW, the keys I have bought from the eBay seller above were OEM and/or Strattec.
