Slow/Lazy to switch before cat O2 sensors, dirty MAF sensor, clogged cat converter, muffler, or kinked exhaust pipe are some suspects that belong on your sub mpg suspect list.
Im able to get 17/18 MPG with my 1995 Ford Ranger v6 4.0 4x4. Juyst traveled 97 Miles and just a tad under the 3/4 mark. And I dont do much highway.
Before hand I was getting 13 MPG in the winter with my hubs locked *i unlock them in the spring to first snow fall. Also I changed my fuel filter, airfilter, and fuel pump. Who knows when those filters were last changed.... lol
looks like i need a tuneup,it sat for 8 yrs before i got it,gave it a tuneup two yrs ago and changed the oil three times. states up and runs good,no noise. i think i will change the timing belt sooner rather than later i have a 500 mile trip ahead(visit inlaws) and don't want to break down in bum f egypt, sorry if i offened any egyptians, they are probably tryin g to figure out where bum f egypt is it is 40th and plumb 40 miles from nowhere and plumb back in the sticks. where men are men and relatives are nervous. sorry about all all that i have been looking at rednecks on youtube and laughing.
If that's 20 MPG on the highway it does seem low. But I've never owned a 2.3.
My 87 Ranger 2.9 with 3.45 gears (axle code 84) gets about 26 on the highway. I have synthetic 10-40 engine oil and synthetic 80-90 gear oil in the manual trans & diff. The synthetics help a bit with MPG.
Whats your axle ratio, does it have a transmission or is it a slugomatic?
i thought you were supposed to use atf in the manual transmission. my milage should go up now that my axle seals are changed and the brakes all around are fixed. the back brakes were soaked with gear oil from bad seals and dragging. the only hard part was getting that little bolt out of the diff.had to take the bearing cap off and the 8mm bolt came apart in two pieces new one at dealer 4 bucks.
The trans code for my 87 5 speed manual is 5 which makes it a Toyo kogyo trans which takes gear oil. I think I lucked out getting the TK trans as it's been bullet proof for 240,000 miles so far including lots of towing. Other Ranger manuals do take ATF.
Check the trans and diff codes on your drivers door.
Yeah, now that your brakes are fixed it should help.
