E-85 is really cheap compared to regular gas, I'm wondering if I need to change anything specifically. My 292 has a rebuilt in 2014 4 bbl Holley carb and everything else related to fuel (pump and hoses ) are new except the tank, sending unit and steel fuel line. Cheers
Funny you should ask, as I was involved with alcohol fuels back about 40 years ago. E85 is 85% alcohol, so the heating value and energy content are much lower than pump gas. First thing you will have to do is rejet the carb, as you will need a much richer mix. Also you will need a bigger shot from the accelerator pump, and possibly a power valve change. Timing is another consideration. For the engines I worked on (none were Ys unfortunately) timing had to be advanced to get decent performance. But the E85 has pretty good antiknock properties so knock should not be a problem.
After you do all of this, your fuel consumption will probably go up 30% to 40%. A downside with E85 on a carbureted engines is that in cold start and cold weather conditions that rich mixtures and poor fuel vaporization can be an issue, leading to cylinder washdown and oil dilution.
Your carb may not like E-85 and get corrosion and other problems, would have to run Gibb's Carb Defender, jetting could be a problem if switching from regular to E-85 and back.
