I had just installed my coolant filter kit a week ago and 1500 miles ago. Decided to switch it out for a new filter and inspect this one. This truck is stock with 102,000 miles. no filter on it until last week. Anyway, the filter looks brand new. I guess the PO took pretty good care of her ...
My first filter had about a table spoon of sand or silt in it. The second one had less. I was happy to see that. BUT........
My third one plugged!!! And I couldn't see the reason why it plugged.
Your first one looks good. Hopefully the next ones will be the same.
my first one had 1/8" of sentiment in the bottom of the 2 bottles i drained the coolant into... 2nd one was a dusting... Im still on the 3rd one... but it wont have a full year on it when it gets changed gotta rip my engine apart and will change it when i finish getting it back together since ill be changing coolant types. 3rd filter will have about 8.5/9 months on it.. so would be close enough to tell how the yr would have looked...
At 105,000 miles, I did a distilled flush and switched to red ELC (about 13,000 ago).
I changed my first filter after 1,500 miles and it had a dark gooey substance on it. Ran second filter for 10,000 and it came out spotless. I'm on my third filter now.
Not sure what direction the coolant flows thru the filter, but OP, you may want to cut it open and check the pleats from the inside. I can't remember which side I found the 'goo' on.
I let my last filter go way too long. The filter actually looked like it was starting to deteriorate. Don't let it go too long before changing.
I don't know the life span of a filter.
The site i got mine from said starting with the 3rd filter it was supposed to be changed yearly... Ive heard of some people doing it every 6 months.. But seemed excessive to me..

the 2nd one was replaced on mine in June... it made it to late February early march before i had to stop driving the truck... Suspect my head gasket finally went about then as she started draining the reservoir tank in just 36 miles... so has been parked since mid march...

depends on how you hooked your lines up. but should be flowing from the outside of the web and into the middle of the filter for the return..
