Installed a dieselsite coolant filter kit last year on my 05 F250 with 17500 miles. Took filter off yesterday and cut open filter at 20700 miles. Pleets were very clean and there was maybe 25 pieces of sand in the bottom of the can. Nothing much at all. Filter could have been used much longer. Was really surprised. I guess thats better then the thing being all clogged up. Take care.
This is not all that unusual. Seems like some engines have lots of casting sand and some not nearly as much. IMO the coolant filter is cheap insurance either way -- if you don't find much sand then it is worth the peace of mind and if you have lots of sand then it get rid of it.
had the same thing with mine. It was really clean but i did get a few rust flakes. My truck was flushed by when the oil cooler was replaced and headgaskets done (before i got the truck) so i am guessing that helped alot too
jack700, That was my experience as well. I installed my filter kit, at 37k miles, and changed out the filter at about 500 miles of use. I was expecting it to be packed full of sand, but was pleasantly surprised to find absolutely nothing.
As others have said, i consider it a good insurance for future filtration in case something shakes loose, so to speak.
Just the first coolant flush on mine. Took and flushed the heating system separately and ended up with over a half cup of sand from it. Then installed Coolant filter. Took some of the sand into the dealer when I had the fuel filters changed. They were amazed. Drive around with the heater(s) wide open for awhile.
Congratulations, my 1st filter plugged up in 300 miles. Glad I put the filter on when I bought my truck new.
When I bought my upgraded EGR cooler from Ken Neal at Neal Technologies I asked him about the coolant filters. He said, based on his experience, unless you put them on right after you buy the vehicle the sand/debris/crap/whatever has already started to collect in the oil cooler and the EGR cooler. The picture of my old EGR cooler that he sent me certainly illustrated that.
I put my filter on at 35,000 miles and now have 83,000 miles on the X. When I first installed it I kept checking the output hose that goes to the coolant tank to see if it was hotter or colder then the inlet. No difference for 15,000 miles. So I changed the filter and cut it open. Very little debris in the filter element and only enough debris in the bottom of the can for a dime to cover. I really don't think mine is providing any benefit since I changed coolant last April when I installed ARP studs. But it is installed and not hindering anything.
69cj.......have you had to replace your EGR cooler and oil cooler?
Wether or not my block has sand in it. I am glad I put this kit on. This is an awesome truck and I like to help prevent any premature failures. I'm sure the earlier you install the kit the better you are. It seems like most failures are happening on higher mileage engines 80+k plus. So it may be a slow collection in the cooler over time and not when the engine is brand new. I may be wrong. But it doesn't seem very common to have clogged coolers say under 50k. So installing this kit at anytime has to be beneficial. Just my thought.

No I havn't. The hit and miss with this sand issue might be why some people have cooler issues and some don't. Hopefully getting mine installed within a couple thousand miles of new was soon enough. My 1st two filters actually plugged. Been good since.

When I spoke with Ken what he said made a lot of sense.
I replaced an o/c and egr cooler on a 04 a month ago for a friend of mine, we flushed the system with a flush for HD diesels from Fleetgaurd because of oil in coolant and installed coolant filter, after 4 yes 4 days it was pluged and we could not feel any temp in the filter it self so that is one way to know ifit is pluged!
