While looking for images of 85 F150s I noticed there are two different versions of two toned paint jobs. One is where the paint separation is below the front marker light, which seems the most common, and the other is where the separation is above the marker light, which is what I have. Does any one know why the different schemes and what they called each scheme?
Thanks,
Barry
Franklin2, can you give us any specs on the '80s Explorer pickups? Was it just an '85 offering? I noticed 'em when I pulled those literature links off of eBay - thought they were sharp looking, but I wasn't sure if this was a special color combo.
Here's a better '85 brochure than the one I found previously; shows the inside pages:
Just wandering down another Bullnose rabbit hole. I was intrigued by Barry's question and wondered if the '85 Explorer pickup was the one with the paint variation.
Here's a few of the ones offered in 1981. Looks like they had names for them. 1981 Ford Pick Up / 10.jpg
I assume they used the same names for '82 correct?
My parts and illustration guide doesn't give names and it was hard to even make heads or tails of what mine is when I was trying to figure out the part number for the pinstriping I wanted to try and track down.
Mine appears to be the Combination Tu-Tone but the difference is in that drawing where it has the white on the sides of the cab roof but then the blue for the roof itself is not how mine is. Mine the whole roof is argent silver. Doesn't even really match up with any of the ones in the parts and illustration guide either.
This is mine though, '82 flare side with what I would call a Combination Tu-Tone.
My '85 F-250 had the Explorer package and it had the Deluxe tu-tone. If I recall correctly I could have ordered other 2 tone schemes if I wanted, but I chose this one (I ordered that truck new)
When looking at any of these trucks in person, I would lift the hood and open the doors and look around the jambs for signs of a re-paint. A body shop could easily make minor variations during a repair or repaint.
Well thank you Franklin2. Here is my 85, with Victoria Tu-Tone.
Mine had that same scheme in reverse. Silver hood and black sides. Kind of hard to tell now since the sun baked so much of it off. Personally it's not one of my favorite two tone designs. It looks particularly odd on a crew cab since the hood color only wraps around the front door window frames. Mine is a 1986 XL.

It is, thankfully mine has never been repainted other than me repainting the hood and touching up spots on the roof.
Mine looks to have the basic tu-tone design but then on the cab roof it uses what is listed as "Type 1" on page 17 of the exterior molding section of the parts and illustration guide.
