As the viscosity of the ATF deteriorates, friction increases transferring mechanical energy to useless and destructive thermal energy. As thermal energy increases, viscosity further degrades, friction goes through the roof and a positive feedback loop is created that quickly brings down the source of the mechanical energy.
With that said, changing the ATF could only help by reversing the positive feedback loop which reduces friction and thermal energy while increasing mechanical energy. Failure at this point ONLY occurs due to component fatigue and stress which already occurred when the positive feedback loop was at it's maximum, and thermal energy and friction were at their greatest!
