Transmission Problems Odd Symptoms Please Help

Ok let's start I have a 1999 f350 7.3 4x4 Work Model that I'm have some odd transmission problems. I drove it 20 mins to do a 2hr job no problems finished that got in took off I few seconds down the road it was like the tranny just dropped out no sound just reved no gears at all. So I shut it down tried to start again would not start in park without pulling up on the lever which had experienced here and there for a good while. So got it started went in gear took off same thing went popped out no gears. I started it again this time used reverse same thing as drive so got it where I knew I could leave it but now it would not start in park anymore at all. Next day picked up a neutral saftey switch changed it now it starts in park every time but still starts going looses the gear then have no gears shut it down sometimes had to wait a few then again same issue any ideas or help with this would be greatly appreciated thanks everyone in advance.

Is there a lot of slop in the shift lever, up and down and/or in and out?

There are essentially two places which can cause this over time.

The first, and most predictable is under the dash there is a steel plate which is attached to the dash frame which holds the linkage. Often these to bolts become loose and require tightening.

The second is the Digital Transmission Range (DTR) sensor becomes loose from the Transmission Case. Although, I have personally never seen one loosen. It's just listed as probable check in the ATSG Manual.

Other options would be a defective DTR sensor which is unlikely unless it has been struck by something from the roadway, a defective column, cable, or mounting hardware.

I disagree. There is no way any sensor can cause the transmission to lose all gears. It could prevent it from shifting out of first gear, but not cause neutral.

If the fluid is at the right level, there are a couple possibilities. One, the internal filter fell off or cracked. Second, an internal failure in the trans.

Guess I should have said that first fluid level is correct first thing I checked. It just baffling me that if I shut it down and restart I get my gears back until I take off then when It cuts out and just revs I have no gears but when first start reverse and drive will engage untill I take off

Mark,

I'm referring to the entire assemble where the cable attaches. Not a "sensor" as an individual item. It's just what the manual refers to. Being ATSG and not Ford there may have been something lost in translation between the two.

On another note to the OP, if you drive it with the selector in 2nd gear does it do it then? Or, perhaps move to 3rd (D). I'm brainstorming that maybe an indication of the cable or the system thereof where its secured to the vehicle and transmission.

I have yet to try the different drive gears only the reverse and drive since it was doing the same thing for both those gears it's parked in another town where it can sit without problems and I was gone for a week and really not wanting to foot the tow bill just yet and I have another truck but I did get under there changed that sensor in the pic but watched as someone else moved the gears for me and it seemed to move like it should I may end up going back to look at it shortly but really I have nothing new to try as of now

When it quits moving forward and you put it back in gear, does it sound normal or does it make any odd sounds? Mark suggested earlier a filter defect as a possibilty. I have seen one time a filter stop up (in a caravan) and cause a similar symptom and it was accompanied by the torque converter pinging (cavitation...not sure how to describe). Either of those possibilties are rare, but possible.

Sounds normal and seem likes the truck notices it's in gear cause to go from park or neutral to a drive gear the engine will change by a few hundred rpms so far one person I talked to has thought maybe the TC and then I have had all your replys with 2 saying the filter is a possibility

Well make that 3. I had a TH 400 once that did exactly the same thing, go down the road fine them bam rev out like it was in neutral. Shutting down for a while would fix it for a few miles. It WAS the filter, a new one fixed it. I know a TH-400 is a far cry from a 4R 100, just sayin. Doesn't cost much to drop the pan.

Thanks and yeah its starting to seem like dropping the pan and trying the filter is about my only option all though I did have a filter clogging on an f150 I had with the same tranny and the only symptom I had with was when ya would first start it and take off on a cold day it would slip a bit and then when it got warm was fine

Well had it towed last night my roadside covered it since I was only 15 miles from the house so didn't have to foot the bill. Dropped the pan and it was pretty clear that I should have done that when I first got the truck, but I don't use it a ton anymore since I have another but it was in desperate need of service. Changed the filter new fluid took it 20 miles no problems. I do have one other question though, I know I can drain the pan and TC but, is there other places to drain to get as much of the old out as possible without a flush? I have heard it's never a good idea to do a flush on a higher mile tranny. Thanks again
