shifts into neutral

My 87 f150 5.0 automatic transmission idles rough. I ordered a new iac, will install next week when it comes in. Besides the idle issues at a stop, When the engine is cold, it will shift into neutral. I have to give it extra gas a few times, increasing the idle and then it goes back into drive. this happens every day for the first mile I drive and then it is ok. Ive checked fluid level in transmission. Any ideas on what is happening to the transmission? Some sensor? Converter? Or can the iac cause this too?

There are no sensors on this transmission. It's all mechanical. The converter can't make it shift to neutral. The IAC can't shift it to neutral, either.

The forward clutch is releasing. This can be caused by low trans fluid, a damaged internal filter, or bad seals in the forward clutch.

So I'd check the filter. If you don't know where it is, just take the pan off and it's right there. Sometimes they fall off (although I have not heard of this problem with the AOD) and then the trans has a hard time drawing enough fluid from the pan.

Use to be the vacuum modulator could cause symptoms similar to this, but I don't know if the AOD has a vacuum modulator on it or not???

Never mind...The AOD doesn't have a Vacuum Modulator, the TV cable is in it's place.

My AOD started this issue back in the fall. First time I drive it(cold), it would basically go into neutral(loose clutch pressure) and I would have to blip the throttle a couple times and it would then grab and go. Only first couple miles, then would be fine the rest of the day. Now that it is 60* and warmer, it doesn't seem to do it at all.

With 170K miles, I'm sure it has its problems. I have a clutch pedal to hang in it to eleviate this issue!
