aod transmission issues?

hello, I have an 87 bronco xlt 5.0 with an AOD transmission. Recently when I shift into reverse it feels like its binding up. Before it would take a few seconds to shift into reverse and"pops into gear and now its a smooth shift and feels like it is binding up and shaking. Any help??

Have you checked fluid level while parked on a level surface with the transmission hot? How long has it been since the fluid and filter were replaced?

Assuming the answers to the above questions are "Fluid level is correct" and "Replaced at the last recommended interval" then its time to check other things. The AOD uses a TV Throttle Valve) cable to deal with shift points but it should have no bearing on reverse as I recall. Driveline slop including u-joints and slip-shaft should be checked as well. Check backlash at the differentials as well.

also make sure the tranny filter didnt drop into the pan, this can cause similar issues.

going to change out the filter today, just discovered a ticking sound coming from the pan and a whining noise. I am completely clueless in what it could be

yea drop the pan and see whats up. i believe that tranny will use Mercon III fluid but double check. the wrong type of fluid will burn it up.

As for a cause for the filter to drop: The filter is typically sealed to the sump tube in the bottom of the transmission by a simple rubber grommet that gets pushed up over the end of the tube. The weight of the filter may be supported additionally by a bolt or two or some odd clips. Either way, incessant vibrations that come from just the engine running are enough to let bolts back out or clips slip and the filter is too heavy once filled with fluid, for the grommet to hold it up alone. Given the relatively long intervals between fluid/filter changes in automatic transmissions, and the fact that all of these parts are internal (above the pan), there is no way to inspect for these types of failures without dropping the pan. If you are going that far, you might as well replace the things that can be replaced while you have it apart.

With all that said DO NOT over-tighten any hardware during installation!

I replaced the filter and gasket, seemed like the old filter was gummed up. Still getting a whining noise and a ticking from the trans. But as far as the reverse issue, it doesn't shake when I turn my tires slightly.
