Help Transmission Troubles

Help, I have a problem with my 91 Explorer that I have not seen here yet. When it is in drive or O/D the transmission wil start and shift to second fine, but will not shift to any higher gear. When the trrottle is released the truck will free-wheel as if it were in neutral. Does anyone know what is going on here? How do I fix it? How much will it cost? Thanks SHD

Guess you already checked the trans fluid level. How long since it was changed? Not sure what transmission would be in that truck, but if it has a vacuum modulator, you should make sure the diaphram's ok and the vacuum line to it doesn't leak. If it has the AOD transmission, there's a cable from the trans to the throttle valve on the engine that could be broken or out of adjustment.

FYI. '91-'94 Explorers with automatic all came with the A4LD transmission. Still, check the vacuum modulator as suggested. It is responsible for controlling the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. How does it behave in L2 and L1? Does it behave differently with the selector in D instead of OD?

Thanks for the info, The trans acts the same whether it is in D or OD. When started in L1 or L2 it will start out in the gear that is indicated but when the shift is moved up to D it stays in 2nd. Again when the accelerator is released the truck well free wheel and idles down to normal idle speed even when going 30 or so MPH.
