I just got towed home by a chevy...how embarrassing...I have a 86 F-250 with a 7.5 and twin fuel tanks...I was driving along and all of a sudden it was like someone shut the gas off...I tried switching between tanks and it starts right up but wont let you put a load to it and it stalls...my question is since the is no fuel pump on the block I have to imagine they are in each tank since I see nothing along the frame...can the switching valve cause this problem?
no when it cranks and restarts it smells extremely rich which I was wondering if it could be a bad coil or ignition box...? it did this to me about 2 months ago but after about 20 minutes of cool down time it seem to straighten out and never had the problem till today. any thoughts would be great!
Go over to the starter solenoid and see if you have a odd wire over there on one of the small terminals. The start terminal from the keyswitch is a red/blue wire. See if you have another one on another small terminal. If you do, take this wire and jump it to the battery + and see if either one of the pumps will work and if it will run.
Thanks Dave for the help...Bought the switch valve for the tanks today and a friend of mine is putting it in...There was one relay on the drivers side by the firewall in the engine compartment which I would think is the relay for the pumps..I took it apart and it had green on the inside and I cleaned it off and the contacts in the plug but no difference...in fact I left the relay out and tried starting and still would somewhat run...maybe thats not the right relay? I had my wife crank it over and goose it a bit and i stood and sprayed starting fluid in the carb and it stayed running...I had this problem about 3 months ago for about 10 minutes and it quit and never happened until the other day. I will look at those wires.
The wire over at the starter solenoid primes the pumps(gives them power) when you are cranking. Then after the engine starts, a oil pressure switch activates the relay and continues to run the pump. You may be running what little fuel that was put into the carb during cranking, and then it runs out. Hot wire that wire I told you about and see if it will keep going.
