I recently bought a 1983 F250, with the 7.5l . Everything was fine till one day it wouldn't crank. I figured it was the battery terminals since they were old and showed some corrosion, so I changed out the terminals. It cranked right up but there stills an issue.. sometimes it would crank and sometimes it wouldn't.
I changed out the solenoid and now the problem is worse. It cranks but now I have wires smoking on the opposite side of the engine and the starter kept turning over the other day when the key was off. It cranked up yesterday and was fine, then I smelt the smoking wires again and the truck cut off. Popped the hood, giggled the wires on solenoid and smoking bunch then it fired up. Went home and parked it. Sorry for being long winded, but I wanted to explain the issue. What did I do wrong?
Any ideas? Bad solenoid? Ignition going out? Thanks for any help or lesson.
Well I took the solenoid off and checked it to see if it was working properly at the NAPA store. They said that it didn't matter which way you hooked it up to the large terminals. The large terminals don't have any markings and they checked the resistance and it was closed. The "s" terminal is hooked to the starter and the "I" to the ignition.

there should only be one large gauge wire going from one side of the large terminal down to the starter, check your grounds as well, the only explanation for the trouble your experiencing is a short. If you can hang a pic, it would be a little easier to diagnose
