I have a 2007 F550 with a 6.0. Truck started running real rough and stalled. I was able to start it back up after a bit but within a few blocks it did the same thing. Was very similar to problems I had with clogged fuel fuel filters before I changed the tank to a plastic one. I pulled the filter and housing on the rail and cleaned and replaced the filter. There was no debris in there. Changed the filter on top of the engine too. Cycled the key 5-6 times. I could hear the pump running but the filter housing on top of the engine did not fill up; all I saw was a very little bubbling and gurgling sound. I opened the drain on the rail filter housing and a little fuel came out but not as much as it should have. Cap is tight, don't see where I could be sucking air. I'm thinking the pump may be shot? Any other thoughts? Only other thought I had was maybe I switched the plugs on the housing on the rail but I really don't think I did. There are 2 plugs on the right hand side. Black plug is plugged into the lower position parallel to the ground while the gray plug is in the higher position. Thanks.
There was a reason for the question! There is a p[lastic footvalve assembly on the bottom of the pickup tube. Depending on where it may be cracked/broken you can suck air at about a 1/4 tank, and another point around a half. Trying to determin where it may be sucking air.
I would double check the O ring on the bottom cap. They have been known to bind and leak. If not damaged lube it with oil and make sure the cap seats. Don't over torque.
Mainly because the fuel pump does not fail that often but sucking air is more common.
Disconnect the discharge hose to the engine see if it pumps fuel into a container.
Other than that check for loose hose connections or pull the pick up and check for damage.
My dad has an 04 CCLB with an additional tank in the bed. He changed his filters because he had a mild hesitation and thought it would be good to get that out of the way. Then, the bowl for the secondary wouldn't fill, replaced the fuel pump and still won't fill. Pump sounds weak compared to my 03. Do not mean to thread jack but did you find your problem? Maybe you can offer some insight...
If you had a tank delaminate, you might want to take the lines loose at each end and blow them out. At least the fuel line to the HFCM from the tank. You can take the fuel supply to engine line loose at the HFCM and have someone cycle the key and see if any is getting through, and the pump is just too weak to lift it to the secondary filter.
Turns out there were two problems... first the fuel pump he got to replace the first was bad... and the water seperator portion of the hfcm was full of red dirt... go figure... and thanks for the advice if we hadn't figured it out we would definitely tried that.
