Help! Bucking, hesitating under load

The truck was originally on manifold vacuum but I changed it when the carb got rebuild because edelbrock recommends ported vacuum (I think, right?) In it's current setup, the engine runs a lot smoother on ported vacuum than on manifold. I have a vacuum gauge ordered from amazon, so I will be able to get a proper tune on the carb, then I will mess with the vacuum advance.

Alright, time to bring this thread to a close. The original problem was heat soak on the PIP sensor in my distributor. I replaced the whole thing, cap, rotor and all. Although the new distributor was good, the tab on the top of the rotor was bent weird and was not making good contact in the cap. After replacing the rotor, the backfiring stopped and I have been running the truck trouble free! This is the first time since I bought the truck in march that is starts and runs reliably! Thanks to everybody for your input.
Along the way, I rebuilt the carb and put a better quality fuel pump in which may not have been necessary, but would have been something I wanted to do in the long run anyway.
