replacing distributor

I want to replace my distributor. I have read the haynes manual and it seems simple enough. I have a question though. It says you have to set the motor to TDC. Can I avoid that? I just want to see if i can simplify this a little more.

They recommend putting the engine at TDC just for ease of the job--if you walk away, or make a parts run, you know it'll be at TDC when you come back (in theory)

As long as you mark the position of the rotor before removing the old one (make sure you mark it on something other thatn the distributor cap adapter--you laugh, but I've seen people do it) then you can just pull and replace the distributor no problem.
Chances are, you won't get the thing put back in exactly in the right position, so you'll have to reset the timing, but that's easy enough to do

When I changed mine out (couple weeks ago on the side of the road--not a good weekend) (I also have a 91-Eddie Bauer BTW)
I just popped the cap off, and it happened to be pointed at the #5 Fuel injector--gave me a good reference point
All you need is some sort of mark to point it back in the same direction--if it's a tooth off, it'll be fairly obvious
