Hi all. Just recently on here there was a few post about hood hinge spring removal. I could use a great deal of assistance with regards to the hood hinges and mounting, etc.
All my hinge pivots work well but I cant test the one under the spring. So I need help in the removal process.
Also, when I place the hinge on the cab, there is a lot of play as to where it goes. If someone could direct me to a couple of good links about these hinges and hood placement in general, that would be great. Searched it, but did not turn up the recent posts.
Jim,
Be careful. There is a lot of energy in a spring. I've had luck in the past using a ratchet strap to assist in removing and installing springs on hood/trunk hinges.
Hood alignment can be a real pain in the rear and adjusting the hinges is not always intuitive. Get it wrong and you can be forever playing the "Hood Hokey-Pokey" to try and get it to close correctly and have the rear corners drop down into place.
Somewhere years ago there was a posting about front sheetmetal alignment. I think AXracer might have posted it but I can't remember.
Thanks Bobby I think Axracer had a good post on the hood. I will go through my post and see if I can find it. I'm still a little ways off from the hood but want to start and have a plan laid out. I know that before I took it all apart, the hood closed perfectly. I hope i'm that lucky.
Also, I remember that when I took my hood off, I did not know the proper sequence and took the bolt off under tension. That shoulder bolt shot around the shop and took me a few years before it turned up. A real surprise.
There is a spring removal tool avail. from DC or NPD. My BIL ended up with a broken hand and what was worse a scratch in the new paint job. https://www.npdlink.com/store/?p=cat...0000&year=1954
Mif-fifty might also have the tool.
When I changed over to new springs, I clamped the hinge bracket securely to a picnic table and used the mentioned hinge removal tool to unload the spring and install the new spring. It helps to take a couple photos of the before hinge bracket so the new spring gets installed correctly.
I have posted about the hood hinges and springs several times. I don't have time to look right now, but if you do an advanced search on my user name and hinges they should turn up. With the hinges off the truck I can remove and replace the springs with just my hands. Trying to do it with the hinges still attached to the hood is definitely the hard and dangerous way, and there should be no reason to take them off with the hood attached.
Thanks GLR, Ranger Pat and Ax . I'll get the tool ordered soon.
Ax. I will look a little later for your post.
Don't buy a tool it's not needed, just take the hinge off the hood, work the arms to minimum spring tension, grab the coil and turn it until you can unhook the end. I just tried it again yesterday to verify.
When taking my hood off, discovered someone had welded a nut on the inside of the hood bracket and when I tried to remove the bolt the nut broke its weld, thus I was stuck with a revolving bolt. I had to hit the arm of the hinge with a cutting disk and I am not recommending doing that. I survived, but my heart is still beating fast afterwards, and that was three months ago! By Jeez those springs have some tension!
