When I bought the 48 pickup the hood didn't close properly. So I removed the hood, both side hinges and both hood arm spring supports and laid the hood back on to see if it was warped in some way. The hood fit fine. I discovered that one of the side hinges was badly worn in the slots so bought a used passenger side hinge on ebay. Put only the side hinges on and closed the hood. It fits very well, 98% perfect. Then conected the hood arm spring supports. The hood doesn't close flush at the top of the hood. Have readjusted the side hinges several times with no luck. Any ideas? Could the hood arm springs be bad? One note, when I close the hood now I need to press down in the area of the side hinges to get it to look pretty close to flush except for the rise in the center of the hood I mention above. Help!
Did you have the cowl side hinges (non-spring) attached to the cowl when you tried to align the hood? I would try attaching the cowl side hinges to the hood and then loosening them from the inside of the cowl while the hood is closed. See if you get movement that way and the hood drops down. If it does, then re-tighten the side hinges afterwards.
Finally got to get back to the hood on the 48 pickup after mowing the lawn today. Pretty hot down here in Texas. Did as you suggested, loosened the side hinges from the inside to see if the hood would drop down. No luck. I can't figure out why the hood fits much better if I disconnect the arm spring holders. Are the spring supports function to pull down on the hood when closed or just to hold the hood open when raised? Maybe both?
The hood springs have two functions as you describe. The problem now appears to rest with the spring hinges. The springs may have lost their tension and are not allowing the hood to be pulled back down on its own, requiring you push it down.
