Looking for a good scanner

I have two 6.0 Ford Diesels and am in the market for a diagnostic tool (Scanner). Does anyone have any recommendations.

Presently I am having issues with a 2005 6.0 Excursion. Runs great and will suddenly die and will not start. I have a cheap code reader and it has shown several different codes at different times. P1102 Mass Air Flow Sensor in range but lower than expected. and then about 100 miles later P 0528 Fan speed sensor no...Both time cleared codes and let sit for a few minuets and it restarted and ran fine. Any suggestions. I would like to find a diagnostic tool that would really tell me something instead of just clearing codes...

This is the thing do you really want a scan tool or just something to monitor your pcm and sensors. Be able to run all diagnostics that the factory would run or just most of them.

Ford VCM and IDS is the best but most expensive. The factory level tool.
Then there are aftermarket scanners like A&E,Scan XL and a few others that work with a lap top. 3 to 4 hundred dollars.
Then you have the hand held Snap-on; Genesys;Mac also several thousand$$
Then you have dedicated monitors Scan GaugeII; Edge CTS or the cell phone apps Torque Pro; DashBoss and several others.

Google will find a whole slew of them.

I am trying to get as much information as I can afford to. The Ford VCM and IDS is out of my ball park.

Looking at: https://www.autoenginuity.com/ and kind of like what they are showing.

Anybody have any experience with this product?

I have a SCT Programer that will read some codes, but it is very limited as a diagnostic tool.

For a good tool and probably the cheapest, Torque Pro.

There a few things the AE does not do the way it should. Contribution test
Is one of them.
I don't know in the Snap-On will or not. That leaves you with the IDS
or one of the clones. To use the one you want a XP Pro computer and
the clone. With the clone you will not be able to program modules.

If you want/need more info on the ones PM me.

On a separate note, Does anyone think that Ford could have found an place to mount the AC Compressor that would have been harder to get to to replace. I am not sure that it is possible to be more difficult.

a scanguage II would be a good, low cost option. It allows you to program codes into it that allow you to tap in to just about any sensor on the vehicle. It doesn't do contribution tests and doesn't read codes as well as some others though.

im inclined to lean towards the Bluetooth devices for engine monitoring. they are the most affordable and give you a lot of gauge options.

SGII gives you 4 readings at a time, a PITA if doing diagnostics. I have that as well as the Torque pro app, with Torque I can get ALL my diagnostics on one screen, and post a screen shot here so the Gurus can tell me which bolts need twisting....

sample pic

But as far as a "scanner" goes, I will be procuring the IDS clone sometime soon(when my 6.0 money tree regenerates some from the last repairs- through forum member Yahiko) as it appears to be the best option for the buck.
Down side vs AE is it's only for ford vehicles.
(for me not too big of deal, I am ford and V.A.G. guy, and to repair those cars one would want the Rosstech vcds software anyhow....)

Just keep in mine that the AE does not do well with the contribution test.

Sean

P.S. Also I may have an extra clone soon.
