Also, the Gearhead tunes were a good bit quieter. If you have not done the Hutch mod then the cackle will probably remain until you do.
A decent way to determine if it is time for o-rings is to look at your fuel filter the next time that you change it. If it is black, you can then decide when you want to replace the o-rings.
NOW, I will inject what may be considered a bit of controversy into this forum. I have a friend who has a 6.0h. He has a love/hate relationship with it. He started using ARCHOIL in it as it had some of the same issues that you are describing. He also tried it in a 7.3 with old tired injectors. Both of the trucks start and run better without the miss that they once had. Smoke is way down too.
I probably would not do the Archoil until after I checked my fuel filter to see if it is black
I don't think oil will make it to the fuel bowl on a sd since it's a dead head system
The sd system is different than the obs
Well, that is what I thought too until my fuel filter started turning black. When that happened I had already done the Hutch and Harpoon mod and had a pre-pump filter and a post pump/pre-fuel bowl filter. I did this in prep for a fuel bowl delete that I did not get around to doing for three months/15k miles.
When I changed my fuel filter 10k into that, it was black and I was wondering what the heck...then it was the same way and even worse 5k later when I actually did the fuel bowl delete.
The oil in the "dead head" system is pressurized to 2800-3200 psi and possibly even more with some tunes. The fuel is normally around 55-65 psi...one o-ring per injector separates all of that pressure. When one or more of them fail then the HPOP easily over powers the fuel pump. My truck also smoked worse during those last 15k and continued to get progressively worse. Oil consumption was also on the rise...1.5 qts per 1k at the end. Got on here and found that others had experienced the same thing. Replaced o-rings and that problem, huge amounts of smoke and oil consumption, was solved until I totally replaced the injectors. Oil consumption is now .5 qt per 5k using Rotella T6
A) no I am running a stock E-99 tune small injectors small swash plate ECT. I felt it was prolly a good idea to leave things alone.
B) What O-rings?
OK. Those o-rings could be the originals and if they are they are getting long in the tooth at 17 yrs. The fuel filter color is still a decent test even with only 115k especially if there were a ton of short trips involved with those miles.
Well I changed out the filter roughly 3K miles ago and in DEC. My new AB injector came in today. So I will be replacing #8 and see how things go. Found a rebuild for $150.
Well I replaced #8 and it started of a little better and then cleared right up. I think it was just a bit loaded up on that hole with oil. Once hot it got better and better. After about a 30 min drive it was perfect and so much more quiet.
