Front Axle Rebuild Help
First things first I've got a 2006 F250 Lariat Crew Cab 4wd. 110k on it. I have a lift going on it now, and 37's wrapped around 20's. This is how I found out I have a problem. The guy who's doing the lift for me while I vacation here in Hawaii, so I don't loose any time with the truck while I'm in town, said the following:
Lot's of play in the hubs, ball joints are tight, thinks it's the bearings. Then said something about it having to do with the 4wd and not the 2wd. So in 2wd they're ok and I"ll be ok, but if I go into 4wd and lock the hubs (manual locking hubs btw) then I'll have issues and noise. Well, being in Hawaii, and not there, I don't know what exactly it is, but I've done some looking, video watching, etc and came to the conclusion that with the new wheels and tires and lift etc, and pulling a trailer, I may as well rebuild the front axles.
I've priced out the following, are these ok parts, or is there something I should use instead? If so, what brands and what part numbers please:
Timken SP940200 Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly x 2
Warn Premium Manual Locking hubs PN 95060
Moog Ball Joints PN K8607T x 2
Moog Ball Joints PN K80026 x 2
Moog U-Joints PN 374 x 2
I haven't been able to find out the part numbers for the seals and bearings etc from Spicer for the 2006 specifically. The places I'm going seem to say 98-04 in a "Master kit". Can someone shed some light on this please.
I found a Master Kit on Amazon from Spicer (
I'm not sure if I'll need outer axle shafts or not, I'm guessing I'll know after I open it up. But the one's I'm seeing on Amazon are Ford Part Number Ford 4C3Z-3B387-AA - SHAFT - FRONT AXLE, But again, it doesn't show a year on it, and when I look I can only find 98-04. My assumption, was that the 03, 04, - 07's were pretty much the same stuff. Am I incorrect?
Do I need any other seals or anything like that? I'd like to have everything on hand of course, when I get it up and ready to work on it.
Thanks for any help everyone. Let me know if you need any other info, I'll try to get you any from what I remember from here. I don't have the truck on hand.
Thanks!
The hub/bearing should come with the a new o-ring, if not, you need one of those. Also you should replace the knuckle seal, it's pretty big. The locking hubs should also come with a new gasket, I believe there is one.
There is also an updated axle shaft seal. I'll get the part #
Tools, I'm gonna get a pic of all the tools I used and you really should have to do the job.
.
I've also see about that homemade seal tool, the pipe and floor base thing. Seems simple enough, but I'm happy to hear what you have used. Then I can be as prepared as possible.
Thanks.
The Moog ball joints, I used the same as you have listed. They fit fine and seem to be holding up well. Installed about a year ago.
I did not replace the knuckle seal (wish I did) so not sure of the part #.

These are the tools,
OTC 7249 Ball joint kit
Astro Pneumatic 7868 adapter kit
SK 7750 Retaining Ring Pliers set
OTC 6697 Knuckle seal driver.
Keep in mind the knuckle seal is not the same as the 94-04, it's a different seal and uses a different seal driver. To my knowledge no one has made a 05 and up seal driver, not saying it can't be done though.
The ball joint kits are pretty standard, but the retaining ring pliers are the only ones I could find that would do the job.
Most of these tools and parts I bought off Amazon.

I'm assuming those are different than the OE ones you mentioned? Mine just say Ford on them.

Although I think the only weak point was the needle bearing.

The bearing is only about $5 though.
The plastic dial works perfectly fine
