How can you adjust the shift points on an A40D trans with a 302 engine? The trans seems to shift too early (under normal driving conditions) and it doesn't down shift unless I put the pedal to the floor. Thinking I may have a plugged up cat I removed the cats.... This didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I just found out today. On the back side of your downshift linkage (The backside from the front of the vehicle *) there is a tab you can pry up. I was told it was there, I even looked but didn't see it. I had to take the darn thing to the trans shop so they could show it to me aaaaahhhhhh! If you remove the engine cover, follow the downshift linkage to the throttle plate where it connects to the bracket which holds it in place. You will notice a spring on the back side (*as mentioned above) of the mount. If you look carefully between the spring the bracket you will notice a small hole catch where you can pry up (on the tab). Be careful not to pry the darn thing out of the bracket, it should pry up about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch up. I was informed that your vehicle should shift at 15mph (2nd), 30-35mph (3rd) and O.D. Not before 43mph, under a light throttle from the start. The trans guy said if it shifts into O.D. before 43 it's not adjusted right. He also stated 45-46mph was right for most vehicles and you can burn up your trans if it shifts below 43 for too long.
This cable serves more than a downshift cable. It also tells the trans what position the throttle is in and this aides in shift points..... I guess becuase the trans isn't fully electronic... Thank god for us Good luck, this darn thing is finally running better. Maybe I don't need that chip after all..... Well, I won't tell my wife that hehehehehehe You can never have too much power!
Next time I will buy big and leave stock
I hope this advise helps!!!!
