Before I dive in, just wondering if anyone had any tips on changing the shift cable on my 97. I tried a search several different ways and came up with nada.
get on your back to pry off the fitting on the shift column end, using a "Y" screwdriver, then you get under the van and do the same. Removing the driver's seat makes the job a lot easier.
then you start to push the cable from the cabin to the ourside, a helper under the van pulls, as you help guide the cable out. There is a rubber grommet behind the accelerator pedal that seals the entry hole at the transmission tunnel.
before you do all this, study the angle and curve that the cable makes after it enters the cabin, and under the van; The cable forms a "J" curve before it reaches the shifter.
Connect the shifter end first, in case you have to twist the cable. Connect the transmission end last.
Thanks.
I think it's bad because it quit shifting, shifter wouldn't go into park, pretty much wouldn't move at all. I unhooked both ends, shifter makes full travel smoothly, lever on transmission makes full travel as it should and I can't move the cable with both ends unhooked. I definitely wanted to make sure it wasn't the shift tube in the column. I had to change one of those in my old Aerostar.
