Shifter cable problems

I have a 94, 4.0 Ranger. Just finished rebuilding the engine with amazing success (first time). Had to remove the transmission because I damaged the pump gear by installing the torque converter improperly. Got the pump gear replaced. Installed transmission and now having problems with my shifter cable pushing the transmission back into park, it really just goes to neutral before the cable bends. I can manually shift the transmission into park by hand. I have tried to rig it with an extra spring with pulling tension to help the shifter cable push it into park. Also since I've reinstalled the tranny the automatic shifting has been rough. If I accelerate too hard while it's shifting and from starting from a dead stop, I get a hellatious grinding noise. The shifting behavior seems to have changed for the better since I put that extra spring for the shifter. Fluid level is good. Is there some coorelation between the shifter cable an/or the kickdown cable as to how well the tranny shifts while driving? I'm confused and I cant seem to find any info. HELP!

The "hellatious grinding noise" is a serious problem. Several things cause that; none of them are good. You shouldn't need springs or manual engagements to make it work. Recheck the shifter cable-make sure it is installed correctly. I would look it over real well to make sure everything is installed correctly. Usually when a cable bends it's because the cable needs to be attached somewhere. Usually on one end or the other, but not always. Keep looking, and don't drive the thing with a grinding noise. Sounds like it's trying to go into park but won't-That will give you the grinding noise. Keep us posted-and more information would be helpful-Anything!

I had replaced the vacuum modulator when I put the tranny back in. Turns out, I left the little rod that goes between the modulator and the transmission out. Put it in yesterday and all's well with the automatic shifting. Still having shifter cable problems. I have looked it over several times. I never removed the bracket from the transmission, so I just slid the clip at the end of the jacketed part of the cable back in the bracket and popped the very end of the cable onto the manual shift lever. Is there supposed to be a rubber boot between those two points? I have just a bare cable and a spring between the bracket and the very end. That's the part thats bending. I doesn't seem to be stiff enough to push the manual shift lever back to "park". I'm thinking I just need to replace the shifter cable.

There is supposed to be a boot at the transmission end of the cable. If yours is missing, then the cable probably has got dirt in it.
Get yourself a Haynes manual. They are cheap & full of important info.
