Ok, long story short...the bronco I bought just after christmas, I had the front end rebuilt and it was awesome. Then without warning, last weekend I lost the tranny (the front seal blew and I lost all the fluid = cooked tranny = ). I replaced it with a junkyard tranny . On start up, everything perfect until we put in gear, the shifter cable broke (it was flemsy when we took it apart). I bought a new cable from O Reilly's. Gonna put it on tomorrow. But a friend of mine told me today these cables had to be adjusted. I've never heard of that before, and yeah I've done several tranny swaps and no I've never adjusted a shifter cable. Question is , is this true.? I only ask because of the broken cable and not wanting to break another. Thanks! Also, if so, how do you adjust them?
Be sure the two bolts on the steering column down by the brake pedal are tight.
Put it in Drive. Set parking brake. Pop the cable off the transmission shift arm. Be sure transmission shift arm is in D. Get a helper to put column shifter in Drive and ask him to put a little downward pressure on the shifter. Back underneath see if cable end is even with shift arm. If not, slide the adjustment clamp out of the cable assembly to adjust. Pop the cable on the shift arm. Test.
