Tire Size??

Hi All,
I have a 2002 Excursion XLT. A friend of mine got me a really nice set of tires for a great price, but they are size P255/70R16. Everything I find including existing tires on the X and the tech specs/owners manual say 265/75R16. I'm not very auto-savvy so wanted to know, will the P255/70R16's work/fit? I have the stock wheels. Sorry if it's a dumb question, I just wanted to be sure before I go back to my friend about it. Don't want to "look the gift horse in the mouth" so to speak.

They will be slightly narrower and shorter than the stock sized tires, kind of the opposite direction than most folks migrate towards.

The main thing is the load rating. D is acceptable but just barely from what I've read but E is preferred.

The Excursion is a pretty heavy girl. I'd recommend "LT" tires instead of "P" tires. Especially if you tow.

The reason I say this is, when I first bought my Super Duty (and first joined this forum), my truck had really crappy tires on it. I had asked about temporarily using some "P" tires to get to work and back (slow speed, not very far). The tire shop refused to put "P" tires on at all, and a couple forum members pretty much blew up at me for considering what they saw as an unsafe proposition.

With that little history in mind, the Excursion is heavier than my truck...

All,

Thanks for the advice. Guess I will go back to the good old Michelin LTX"s. Don't tow but safety of family is why I have had Excursions in the first place! Thanks again.
