I've been looking for a winter beater to keep my Excursion out of the salt. I am not scared of the 6.0, and know what to look for engine-wise if I go to check it out. I know that a cheap car beater is easy, but with the weather around here 4x4 is a must.
In terms of the shifter linkage, is this a simple fix? I would want to fix it and drive it before I bought it. Need to see how the truck and engine behave and what condition the 6.doh is in.
Do you guys think this is something I should be looking at? Like I said it would be a beater, I don't need it to shine. The plow is just a bonus.
The shifter on the column connects to a cable that goes down
to the transmission on the driver side to a shift shaft with a
ball knuckle on it. The question would be did it break something
in the cable half or did it break the shaft going into the transmission.
With the 5R110W trans you can't trick it. the shift sensor is
electronic sensor that can't be replaced with a switch.
If you have access to a scanner that can read live data you want
to have a look under the truck with the scanner set to display
shift info or what gear it thinks it's in. Remove the cable from the
ball joint on the transmission with KEY ON ENGINE OFF
also Parking brake set You may want to block the wheels don't
want to hear about you getting ran over.
While reading the output see if you can shift it and get a reading from the
scan tool.
If something like the shift control in the transmission broke that can be fixed.
But if that is ok and it won;t move then your have more work.
The 5R110W trans from ford is about $3600 with a $1000 core.
If you go to Ed at FICMRepair.com - FORD Powerstroke 6.0 FICM Repair, PHP Tuning and Truck Parts
He can get the same Ford transmission with a real Ford warrantee for
quite a bit less. That is if you need to even do that.
If the cable broke of the ball on the selector is beat up that should be less.
Good luck with the hunt and post back what you find and do.
Also if you do get it come one over the the the 6.0 Forum section and say HI.
For that price is worth considering esp. With the plow. Could clear your own drive and maybe save a buck there if you have been paying for it to be done. Give it a good look over. The 03-04's have a weaker hpop pump. But that is something you can watch the psi and see signs of it failing usually. You could even semi the plow down here used they go for 1500-1800 easy. It would be worth the trip to at least check it out.
Well I was kind of figuring if it was a quick fix to just fix it, drive it, and if they want to monkey with me I just rip out my fix and tell them to have a nice day.
I see where you are coming from though, I could probably get a better deal just buying as is where is. I would definitely want to duck under and see if the tranny is salvageable though.
If I had the access I would roll in with a flatbed do a short inspection
load her up after handing the $ over and head on home with a stop at
the transmission shop for a better idea on what is going on.

I would show up with cash money and a trailer.
People seem to do things they wouldn't otherwise when you show up wit a fist full of $100 bills.
Offer them $1,000 but bring $1,800 or so. I bet you take it home.
if it was a simple econimical fix...seller would probally have done so...hes throwing it over the fence becuase he knows something....pricing it accordingly.
If it was me, I wouldn't consider it. There are plenty of good, running vehicles out there for much less than that one that would be a better choice(cheaper to buy and less headache to own). Obs truck, old Subaru(or other awd car/suv), etc.

Or he is sick of it darkening his yard and just wants it gone...
Talked to the guy, he should patent whatever he is smoking because he could make a killing.
First of all he upped the price on a new ad to 4000 but said he was dropping the price again in the ad. A real character, he really wants the 4000. I asked him and it looks like the linkage broke off in the transmission, which means it needs a new tranny from what I have read.
I got a line on a 2001 Silverado with a plow for $500 that's on the road and running. Good beater to keep the diesel excursion off the road and low miles. Will post up pics when I pick it up. It's in good shape, I'm getting a deal because I'm dating his stepdaughter haha.

Cheers and thanks for the input,

So long as they did not crack the case or destroy the valve body.
It's not too bad to replace that shaft. Two roll pins, the gear
position sensor a seal and the new shaft.
The one roll pin that is under the pan gasket can be a REAL PITA X2.
