Hi,
Looking to hook up a water temp and volt guage to my 1989 F-150.
My question is the wiring for the backlighting. Was wondering where you guys are getting your power for the backlight and how (connection) you are getting it???
If I do not go to a dimmer circuit is there a way to set the brightness of the backlighting and leave it there?
Any info on the most painless way to do this is appreciated!
If you have an aftermarket stereo, it's easy to tap into the harness there, and the wires are clearly labeled and color-coded. There's a switched +12V wire for gauge power, and an illumination/dimmer wire for the backlight.
I'd just tap off the dimmer lead where the rest of the instrument lighting is connected. Not sure on the wire color for your year truck.
And please don't use a quickie connect blue thing or a butt connector either. Do it right by soldering the new wire to the existing wire. If you want to be able to disconnect it easily then get a single wire connector and solder that on first.
Ground you can pick up anywhere on the metal dash frame.
Hi,
Ok, I understand that I can go to the (12v+) dimmer wire and put in the pos. wire from the backlight wire from the Autometer guages, and then can really ground anywhere I want and my factory instriment lighting will still work???
Of course my power wire will come from a keyed source in the fuse panel!
