Issues with my Carb

I finally got the truck running but when i close the choke plate it dies out, when I press on the gas it dies out. All it wants to do is die, all I want it to do is live. I have rebuilt the carb, placed a new fuel filter, now I dont know what to do.

Holley 1850 4 barrel
Inline fuel filter

Thanks for the help

If you close the choke plate it should die out.

That is what a choke does. Its why they call it a "choke".When its open it lets air in, when its closed it "chokes" the engine.

......april fools?

If not, it dies because it isn't getting enough air when the choke is closed. And yes it should stay open once the engine is warmed up.

Okay see now you guys have my mind blown. because holley says to close it after the truck is at running idle. so why should it stay open the whole time?

Not quite sure where you may have read that. Just to add to your confusion, some guys eliminate the choke all together.

I attached the bit about adjusting the choke. Here is the full manual straight from holley.com - http://documents.holley.com/199r7948-5rev6.pdf

Engine needs 4 things to run; air, fuel, compression, ignition (spark). When you close the choke, you're restricting the amount of air the engine can take in. It helps get things started, but isn't intended or designed to be operated (or closed) full-time.

This article may help clarify your understanding - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choke_valve

okay so I will probably just remove the plate. but lets get to the point where when I pull the throttle open it will "choke" and shut off. any ideas on that?

How old is the carb? They need cleaning or "rebuilding" every few years, especially if they have sat for a long time. Make sure linkage isn't binding, idle mixture adjusted, idle RPM etc. Shouldn't have to remove the choke plate.
