I finally got the truck running but when i close the choke plate it dies out, when I press on the gas it dies out. All it wants to do is die, all I want it to do is live. I have rebuilt the carb, placed a new fuel filter, now I dont know what to do.
Okay see now you guys have my mind blown. because holley says to close it after the truck is at running idle. so why should it stay open the whole time?
Engine needs 4 things to run; air, fuel, compression, ignition (spark). When you close the choke, you're restricting the amount of air the engine can take in. It helps get things started, but isn't intended or designed to be operated (or closed) full-time.

okay so I will probably just remove the plate. but lets get to the point where when I pull the throttle open it will "choke" and shut off. any ideas on that?
How old is the carb? They need cleaning or "rebuilding" every few years, especially if they have sat for a long time. Make sure linkage isn't binding, idle mixture adjusted, idle RPM etc. Shouldn't have to remove the choke plate.
