4speed OD swap
Anyone out there swaped in a 4 speed OD manual trany?
My brother just got in an 86 E141 Van with a 4 speed OD trany his book said its a 20% over drive. The shifter is mounted on the tail shaft and it bolted to a 300 6cyl.
I'm thinking it be nice in my 65, i've allready got a 302 in it so it should bolt up. Not sure how I'll do the shifter yet.
Ant big problems with this swap?

Dwarf if it is the SROD (single rail over drive) I got one in mine. The shifter is real far back on the tailshaft. It will come through the floor right in front of the seat. I had to fabricate a shifter for mine. It needs to point forwards like in a Shelby Cobra but you can't reverse the shifter. I had to cut mine and weld some 3/4" round stock to it at the apropriate angle and length. With the 3.50 gears in 4th I'm turning 2200 rpm at 75 mph. I don't have enough umph to really accelerate in 4th, but it cruises nice on the flat. It dosen't like to be shifted hard so don't try to drag race with it. I'm told the cases are weak on these things so don't abuse it. Good luck, Rich

I figured I'd have to make a upside down 7 for a shifter. Going to go with 4:10 in the rear so i can creep around when pulling the trailer. Use OD only when unloaded.
I figured $100 for the whole thing was not bad. bell-housing to drive shaft.
My wife would rather keep the column shifter but can't find an old time OD unit for that price.

Nice thing is it weighs about 35lbs. rather than 60-100. Those old O/Ds are a pain and parts are expensive when you can find them. I had one in mine 59, broke three cluster gears before swapping to a standard 3 spd.
