no reverse

I have a 2000 Ranger 3.0 4x4 with over drive. When backing out of my driveway there was a harsh "thud" (for lack of a better word) and I lost reverse. The forward gears are still working. We pushed it out on to the road and I drove to my place of business. At that time reverse worked again. It only lasted a couple more times. Still have the forward gears. Any ideas? Could it be a band or clutch?

thanks in advance.

Welcome to FTE.
If you have a blinking OD lamp, tranny code clues are stored, so use your ELM327 scantool with FORScan or the like software on your viewing device, to scan for tranny trouble codes & post up All code Numbers.

OD light does not blink. Codes that came up are of another nature. May not be using the correct scan tool. Will check with my tech to see what is tool is.

Thanks

We need a special high end scantool, like the ELM327, ect, that's able to access & read all of the vehicles computers/controllers, to get tranny codes. If its costing you big bucks to get the tranny scanned, consider purchasing the inexpensive ELM like discussed here, running freeware FORScan or the like software & you've come by a very powerful diagnostic tool for your electronic toolbox for not much of your gold. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html

The codes you had posted were from the engine computer.
P0455 = Gross evap system leak.
P0300 = Random misfire. Probably caused by the gross evap system vacuum leak corrupting fuel trim.
P1000 = OBD-ll monitor testing incomplete. Again, probably caused by the gross evap system leak.
Does the OD lamp light up when you switch the OD off, so you know its not burned out???
There may be codes stored from the first incident, even though it seemed to have cleared itself, so its worth a look, as any tranny trouble code clues could give you a good idea whats going on inside.
Had you been having any signs of it acting out beforehand????

Od light does not blink when OD is off. This is in a idling situation. let it run for ten minutes. tech says that his scan tool should read tranny codes, but was going to check manual just the same. Prior to this happening nothing notable had happened. Was a big shock to say the least. Should I try driving it to see if OD light blinks?

Thanks

First, does the OD light come on/light up when the OD is turned off??? If so, we know its not burned out, or having an electrical problem. If it comes on so we know its working, it might be helpful to know if it begins to blink when things act out, as that would be an indication that the tranny controller has detected a problem & stored a trouble code clue.

Yes...OD light comes on when OD is off. Did not get a chance to get much further than that today. Tomorrow I will put in reverse to check if it starts to flash or go out.

Thanks

Ok good, we know the OD light isn't burned out. If the Tech's scantool can scan for & read tranny codes, but found none, then look for loose linkage, or a TRS problem.

Another tech suggests that problem might be internal. Suggest that o rings in reverse servo might be shot. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Could be, but the tranny computer is fairly sophisticated & is monitoring a lot of things, so with reverse not engaging, it should have been aggravated enough to have at least one trouble code stored saying the computer isn't happy. So, have you had the tranny computer scanned for trouble codes????

If no tranny codes stored & seeing as how so far only R is affected & its sometimes ok & your in cold country that's had lots of ice & snow this winter, have you inspected the tranny control linkage & the tranny drivers side mounted TRS = Tranny Range Switch, to make sure its properly aligned, the mechanical linkage & electrical connections to it & its mounting bolts are all in place, undamaged & tight & the internal TRS electrical contacts are without corrosion as any of these things can cause shifting woes????
