Hey guys i wondering if you could help. I pull my 302 fmx from the p o. It was hacked up to begain with. So a 400 c6 went back in. I did nt mark the neutral safety switch. I ve looked at wiring diagrams, but I can t find what plug it is. Anyone know the color of wires or and the plug? Thanks
Does the FMX even have a transmission-mounted switch? I just pulled the 302/FMX the PO had in there out of mine, and my NSS is in the steering column on my '74 ... don't recall seeing any provision for it on the FMX, though I could've missed it. And there's no reason you would've removed a column-mounted switch when swapping, right?
Should have added the trucks a 77 and the engine and tranny is a 81, the trans has two wires with a plug that reaches up around the brake booster. Do I need to have it connected for my truck to start and have back up lights
Steering column switch looks like this, well sort of. It is normally attached to the columb 9R/H pic) and not hanging from a zip tie and have a screw in it. AKA red neck NSS bypass.
Mine had been moved by the P.O. but the plug from my 76 F100 was located behind the instrument panel/gauge cluster towards the left side. Almost in between the gauge cluster, and the wiper switch.
Mine looks exactly like this:
One wire you can easily find is coming from the back of your keyed ignition switch. RED wire with BLUE Stripe. This wire goes from the ignition, straight over to the Neutral Safety Switch plug. If you have a wire probe, and a continuity tester you can run it down in short order.
Since your truck is a '77, look under the dash, around the steering column. There should be a flat 4 wire connector that looks similar to a trailer light plug. It will have four wires going to it, two red w/ blue trace and two black w/ red trace. This will be the connector for the neutral start switch. Two of the wires are for the neutral start circuit and the other two are for the back up lights.
Just so you know, in '78 Ford moved the NSS to the side of the transmission. It surrounds the shift arm.

Sounds like someone may have cut off two of the wires, there should be four. Take a close look at the switch and see if there weren't originally four wires. If that's the case you'll need to replace the switch. After that, you can lengthen the wires and run them to the plug under the dash
